A Scout hiking stick (or staff) is a traditional 5-to-6-foot wooden pole used for stability, navigation, and pioneering. It symbolizes scouting adventure, mastery of skills, and serves as a personalized record of achievements.

Key Symbolism and Functions:
  • Symbol of Achievement: Scouts often customize their staves with medallions, notches, or badges to mark milestones, such as ranks, mountain summits, and miles hiked.
  • Practical Tool: Used for testing depths, clearing brush, setting up tents/tarps, etc.
  • Versatility: Can be used to make stretchers or in emergency situations.
  • Tradition: Historically part of the uniform to promote preparedness, as emphasized by Lord Baden-Powell.
  • Types: In addition to the standard staff, the "Rover Thumbstick" is used by older scouts for navigating difficult terrain.
