2026 Team 1 Silver Award Achievement Speech
Good morning everyone,
The legendary Jane Goodall once said, 'What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.' Today, we are here to celebrate three young leaders—Emily, Hailey, and Queenie—who decided to make a difference by bridging the gap between generations.
The greatest gift you can give someone is your time and your presence. Their project, 'Connecting Seniors: Family Day at Oakmont,' was born from a deep sense of empathy. After researching the serious impacts of social isolation and loneliness among older adults—issues that can lead to significant health risks like dementia—Emily, Hailey, and Queenie decided to take action.
A community is only as strong as the bonds that hold its generations together. On August 16, 2025, they transformed the Oakmont of San Jose assisted-living facility into a vibrant hub of connection. They didn’t just host an event; they created an experience designed to bridge the gap between generations and bring families together.
- Emily served as the Memory Book Coordinator, leading the creation of personal scrapbooks that allowed residents to preserve their most cherished memories.
- Hailey, as the Entertainment Coordinator, filled the air with music and joy, managing the karaoke and games that boosted everyone’s spirits.
- Queenie took on the role of Photo Booth Coordinator, capturing beautiful moments between residents and their families.
There was a point during the karaoke where the music seemed to erase the years between the generations. I watched Hailey encourage a shy resident to pick up the microphone, and within minutes, three generations of one family were singing along together. That is the 'lifeline' of connection these girls worked so hard to build.
Because of Queenie’s vision, those families didn't just leave with a happy memory—they left with a physical photograph in their hands. She transformed a simple activity into a bridge between generations, capturing moments of joy that many families told us they would treasure forever. Her attention to detail ensured that the 'Connecting Seniors' project wasn't just an event, but a gallery of new family milestones.
Sustainability was at the heart of their mission. By setting up a permanent, fully-stocked scrapbooking corner, they’ve guaranteed that these intergenerational bonds will continue to grow long after the event. Queenie, Hailey, and Emily didn’t just throw a great party—they established a permanent space for joy and a new home for family traditions.
On a personal note, it has been a true honor for me to serve as their advisor. However, it took a village; tr. Kim helped to facilitate meetings and location visits. Tr. Nhan guided them through the final writing report and the final report. Other TNHG leaders—Tr. Terry, Tr. Trang, Tr. Thuy, and Tr. Kiet—provided essential support, from hosting meetings to preparing food. And finally, their parents and the girl support team helped them tremendously through their project. Thank you very much!
For me, watching them navigate challenges, develop new skills like delegation and event planning, and grow into the leaders they are today has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Their dedication to making the world a better place is an inspiration to us all.
Emily, Hailey, and Queenie—you have shown us today that leadership isn't just about managing a project; it’s about heart and legacy. As your advisor, it has been a privilege to watch you grow. I look forward to supporting each of you as you carry these leadership skills forward into your Gold Award journeys, knowing you will continue to change the world, one connection at a time.
