TNHG: 2022: Silver Award Take Action Project - Hillary, Kathy and Natalie

Below is the report of the girls' Take Action Project (TAP).

Saint Maria Goretti Church Outdoor Library

Our Take Action is to build an Outdoor Library, which consists of a large wooden shelf sectioned into 9 segments for books to be placed in. The segments are covered by 3 narrow doors with windows. Supporting the shelf is a wooden table, surrounded by succulents for an aesthetic touch. The library is painted to look like a cathedral, in honor of its home.

Here are some photos the girls took while designing the model of the Outdoor Library. Eventually, they would become the finalized design for the rest of the project.

Another picture of the model depicts the need for precise measurements of the draft of the Outdoor Library

Collecting Books

We asked for donations from our troop, Lien Doan Truong Giang by emailing Scout Leaders and parents.

On the first day of collecting books, we asked our troop for some books and what our project was about. On that day, we left a crate to put books in; however, when we emailed our troop, the email was sent too late so we weren’t able to get any books that day.

On the second day of collecting books, we put another crate at the pole and got so many more books! We left them at Hillary’s house so we could sort through them later. On the day we did sort through the books, the books were sorted by the age group. For example, there was a pile of books designated for the kids and another pile of books for the teens. After that, we sorted through the books again but this time we made a pile of books to put into the library. The books that weren’t chosen would be kept for storage so if any books were taken from the library, the church could refill the library with books.

Unfortunately, there weren’t many Vietnamese or Spanish books so on Wednesday, August 17, Hillary called a few public libraries to see if they could donate some books they had no use for. The Biblioteca Latinoamericana Branch Library and the Tully Community Branch Library both donated some books. The Biblioteca donated some children’s spanish books while the Tully library donated some vietnamese books.

On the day of the installation, we put in the chosen books in the library. We also got more books but since we couldn’t fit those books into the library, we decided to put them into the storage.
